Professional development is essential for every individual, whether employed or not. It is vital for every business and professional organization to increase the knowledge and skills of their employees. They should strive to enhance the quality of performance, to ensure an improvement on the personal and professional front.

Professional development is necessary to increase knowledge and skill, through certified and consistent education in the profession. A professional development program boosts the individual’s career, through travel, research, workshops and seminars and by working with professionals who are experienced. People take up a professional development course to build their expertise in business, teaching and nursing and contribute to organizational development.

Professional development courses are either general, or skill- based. General professional development caters to general skills, through basic personal education. Skilled development on the other hand, deals with the current profession, leadership qualities, managerial skills and enhancing a person’s productivity. The courses are designed with the intention of developing a person’s level of competency and professionalism. The successful completion of the course opens avenues for unlimited growth.

Professional development training courses are not only applicable to people in business or management, but are also important for professionals such as teachers, technicians, nurses and engineers. Some of these professional courses are officially recognized and certify the candidates, on completion. This recognition is an added advantage of being trained at professional development institutes.

The professional development course ensures occupational education and helps beginners to choose the right career, at the very start. Professional development institutes host a series of seminars and workshops, to provide knowledge through mentors and experienced businessmen. There are trade- specific seminars also conducted, to provide professionals with in- depth information on specific professions. Career based programs held by professional development institutions are very helpful in deciding the best career option available.

Types of computers

There are a number of computer options to select from in today’s computer and technology market. Today, computers come in different sizes and styles. Current computers are made in a way that they fit people with different needs and requirements. Apart from the initial desktop and laptop computers there are other types of computers available on the market. Netbook and tablet PCs computers are now available, and a number of people are using them for different purposes.

Netbook PCs

Netbook PCs are similar to small laptops and are primarily meant for travel. They are smaller and lighter when compared to the standard laptops. Netbook computers do not have in-built DVD or CD drives, and their storage space is less. Netbook PCs requires less computing power and are relatively cheap. Netbook PCs perform basic computing activities e.g. word processing and Internet surfing.

Laptops

Coming to the laptop computers, they are solely meant for placing on the lap of a person. What distinguish a laptop from a desktop is the size, structure and mobility. Although laptops are mobile devices, they are not meant for travel. However, laptops are more convenient than desktop PCs.

Tablet PC and convertible laptops

A tablet is a compact single-screen device. Instead of using the traditional keyboard in desktop and laptop PCs tablets use a stylus or finger touch. General uses of tablet PCs are media playing, sending email, reading among other uses. Tablets come in two design namely convertible tablets and slate tablets. On the other hand, a convertible laptop is similar to a tablet PC. The keyboard of the convertible laptop can be folded to form a touch screen tablet. It allows on to use a stylus or touchscreen.

Desktop PCs Vs laptops

A desktop computer primarily stays in one position. The size and components of a desktop computer do not allow for easy moving. However, the system of a desktop PC is stronger and more powerful than that of a laptop. Laptops are mobile and more convenient than desktop PCs but upgrading laptop hardware is nearly impossible.

Laptops Vs tablet PCs

The primary advantage of a tablet over a laptop is the weight. Tablets are light, and you can use them while walking unlike laptops which require you to sit down while working on them. Tablets are useful when one is in a conference since they can be laid down. In today’s computer market there are laptop tablet PCs which are basic tablets but have a keyboard and mouse attached to them. You can use them vertically as a traditional style laptop or use them as a tablet.

Also known as span of control, is a very important concept of organizing function of management. It refers to the number of subordinates that can be handled effectively by a superior in an organization. It signifies how the relations are planned between superior and subordinates in an organization.

Span of management is generally categorized under two heads- Narrow span and Wide span. Narrow Span of management means a single manager or supervisor oversees few subordinates. This gives rise to a tall organizational structure. While, a wide span of management means a single manager or supervisor oversees a large number of subordinates. This gives rise to a flat organizational structure. There is an inverse relation between the span of management and the number of hierarchical levels in an organization, i.e., narrow the span of management , greater the number of levels in an organization.

Narrow span of management is more costly compared to wide span of management as there are larger number of superiors/ managers and thus there is greater communication issues too between various management levels. The less geographically scattered the subordinates are, the better it is to have a wide span of management as it would be feasible for managers to be in touch with the subordinates and to explain them how to efficiently perform the tasks. In case of narrow span of management, there are comparatively more growth opportunities for a subordinate as the number of levels is more.

The more efficient and organized the managers are in performing their tasks, the better it is to have wide span of management for such organization. The less capable, motivated and confident the employees are, the better it is to have a narrow span of management so that the managers can spend time with them and supervise them well. The more standardized is the nature of tasks ,i.e., if same task can be performed using same inputs, the better it is to have a wide span of management as more number of subordinates can be supervised by a single superior. There is more flexibility, quick decision making, effective communication between top level and low level management, and improved customer interaction in case of wide span of management. Technological advancement such as mobile phones, mails, etc. makes it feasible for superiors to widen their span of management as there is more effective communication.

An optimal/ideal span of control according to the modern authors is fifteen to twenty subordinates per manager, while according to the traditional authors the ideal number is six subordinates per manager. But actually, an ideal span of control depends upon the nature of an organization, skills and capabilities of manager, the employees skills and abilities, the nature of job, the degree of interaction required between superior and subordinates.

Yukon Solitaire is fun card game, requiring the ability to plan elaborate sequences of long moves. It is quite unusual compared to other solitaire games, because it lets you move stacks of cards when they aren’t in sequence.

It isn’t possible to win every game of Yukon Solitaire, but a good player should be able to win more than 80% of the games they play, if they use the right strategy…

The key to doing well in Yukon Solitaire is to work backwards. Instead of doing any move that is possible, the player should work to expose the uncovered cards.

Starting from the first stack, look at the top exposed card. Then try and find another card that the exposed card could be moved onto, and then try and re-arrange the cards to make the move.

This might be best shown with an example:

Suppose the top exposed card in a column is a red 3. You need to find a black four to play onto. There is only one black four in play right now, and it has a black 6 directly underneath it. So the black 6 needs to be moved… which means that a red seven is needed. Suppose there is a red 7 visible at the bottom of a stack… Then play would proceed like this:

Black 6 onto the Red 7

Red 3 onto the Black 4

And a covered card in the column has now been exposed.

Now usually, the sequence will take longer than that. Sometimes I’ve played out sequences over 10 moves long!

You will find that some columns can not be exposed at this time. Either a card in the sequence is missing, or a card you need is already being used (In the example above, if the black four already had a red three underneath it, then play would be blocked, because there would be nowhere to move the other red three onto).

When that happens, just move onto the next column. I find it helpful to leave my mouse cursor above the column I’m currently analyzing. This helps me to remember which column I am up to, which can be particularly handy if you’ve just been investigating a really long sequence.

If you can’t find any columns that can be exposed, then it’s time to start looking for cards to free that can be moved to the foundation. Are there any cards you can move that would allow you to free an Ace?

If you follow this one tip, you should find that you can quite easily win at least 80% of the Yukon Solitaire games that you play.

Do you ever find yourself working for hours on end sitting in an office chair without getting up to take a break? This is not uncommon, in fact most people either do not know or forget to take breaks when working long hours sitting in one position. Whether you work full time or part-time from home or in a traditional workplace setting, it is still important to take breaks. Taking breaks while working long hours is essential and crucial to your health.

Employers may need to think about the environment in which their work takes place in order to develop an adequate plan for allowing time for breaks. For jobs which are full time, two shorter breaks is often adequate. People who work behind a computer all day should take a break every hour or so and be able to get up and move round. This enables them from being in a seated posture all day staring at the screen. People who work in highly repetitive jobs should be offered more frequent shorter breaks in order to prevent boredom which can result in a decrease in productivity, a decrease in proficiency, and less mistakes. There are many reasons why regular breaks are important; here are just a few.

  1. Circulation is impaired by prolonged sitting: When you sit in static postures where you are not moving, circulation can be impeded. When blood flow to an active muscle is impaired, the oxygen supply is diminished, which over time can impair muscle function. The feeling of fatigue often is related to circulation and blood supply.
  2. Working on the computer distorts the awareness of time: When working for long hours on the computer most people do not take breaks frequently enough, nor do they realize how much time has passed since they began working. An easy way to eliminate this problem is to make sure people take regular breaks by using time reminders.
  3. Burnout: People who work continually face complete burnout and what good is a burnt out employee? Physical exhaustion can lead to problems such as chronic headaches, fatigue, inability to concentrate, and trouble sleeping at night. Even if all you take is 15 minutes during an 8 hour work day, you can use that time to refresh yourself and feel more energized the rest of the work day.
  4. Productivity: Many studies have revealed that workers who take breaks are dramatically more productive during the day as opposed to those who do not. After a break, your performance levels increase dramatically so that you can tackle tasks again with renewed vigor and finish them accurately. Mistakes are also made more when you do not refresh your mind and body.
  5. Heart Risks: After researchers in Finland conducted a study on a group of nearly 800 workers over the span of 28 years, they found that subjects who failed to find time to recover from their workweek were more likely to eventually die of cardiovascular disease. If people are not able to relax periodically, plaques can build up in their arteries which contribute to potential heart attacks and or strokes.
  6. Stress: Focusing on a tedious task for too long can easily lead to physical and mental stress. Stress as most know, can lead to serious implications for our health. Common consequences of stress include high blood pressure, high blood sugar, poor fitness, low resistance to viruses, and serious illnesses. If something that is being worked on becomes too stressful, it is best to take a break from it and resume the work once calm and collected.
  7. Repetitive Stress Injuries: Especially for those that sit at a desk all day staring at a computer, it is easy to develop repetitive stress injuries such as eyestrain from staring at a computer screen too long. Carpal Tunnel is also another injury which can develop from spending too much time typing and not typing in the proper position. Sitting in an office chair too long generally leads to wanting to fidget and move posture, most of the time into improper posture. By not sitting correctly and having adequate lumbar support, back and neck pain is sure to develop.

When starting your new routine of taking breaks, start small with 5 minute breaks and work your way up in about a week or two. Taking breaks at work cannot be considered being lazy, especially when you take short meaningful ones. There is no harm in trying, but there is harm in not trying.

Picture two fires ablaze in your beloved community. Different individuals represent each building with equally good plans on how to stop the fire. One steps forward reminding the people that his historic site has a valuable legacy to all, while the other structure is merely an empty warehouse. He calls out with hands held high for everyone to grab their buckets and form a line, chanting cheers to their accomplishments. The other person gets out their blow horn barking out orders to get going, demanding results or else, “I’ll hit you with my cane.”

Where would you focus your efforts? To whom would you give your highest level of efforts? People who are inspired to do their best for a larger purpose bring substantially more than lemmings “going through the motions” in fear of disciplinary action.

This story simply illustrates the value of both leadership and management and why they must co-exist to have truly great accomplishments. You need to simultaneously have a larger perspective and be able to clearly define the steps to get where you need to go. A higher vantage point benefits one greatly with vision and knowledge, but at the same time, one cannot do what one cannot define.

Last week, we held a Luminary Board meeting with some of the top C-Level minds in our area. The discussion was around how to make good managers better, of course, and the constant betterment of the approach to make that a reality. A resonating point was brought to light when a brilliant mind surmised, “An ‘A’ player to me is not just a manager but a leader.” What a difference.

To gain further perspective, here is a quick checklist to help define those differences between managers and leaders:

MANAGERS……LEADERS

Manage other’s activities……Motivate others to achieve

Make plans……Promote vision

Formal authority dictated……Given authority through influence

Task focused……Achievement focused

Risk averse……Risk seeking

Tell……Persuade

Have subordinates……Have followers

Transactional……Transformational

Focus on things……Focus on people

Create systems……Create an environment

Short-term approach……Long-term approach

Develops……Innovates

Administers and tracks change…….Maintains continual improvement

Acquired rewards……Intrinsic rewards

All about control……All about trust

The fact is, the most effective leaders have both characteristics. But managers without leadership traits simply will not become true leaders. What they can do is focus their efforts around ongoing improvements that increase their performance to help close the gap.

It has been said…Managers do things right. Leaders do the right things. Utopia exists when we are doing the right things right.

It has been estimated that at least 90 percent of filed records are not to be referred to again and that 95 percent of references consists of records within the last three years of operation.

Large organizations tend to lose a document or file every 12 seconds, with an estimated 3 to 5 percent of files that are either lost or misplaced.

Document Management and Storage

It has become increasingly difficult to create, store, retrieve, use and destroy organizational information or merely place them under permanent archival retention.

Digital media include optical disks, audio and videotapes, microfilm, computer tapes and disks, streaming cartridge tapes, and backup data tapes. Specially designed storage boxes are provided for them to simplify document management.

With high tech information management systems available, modern organizations can electronically index, keep track and gain access to their stored digital media through the convenience of their office PC.

Digital media and data storage companies usually provide personalized service to their clients. They take charge of the pickup, delivery or even destruction of file boxes, whichever case is applicable.

The storage companies catalog the contents inside the filing cabinets and place them into the storage boxes. They normally use a technologically advanced bar coding system for easy and efficient tracking of boxes.

Their competitive rates usually include reasonable rates for pickup and delivery, and low monthly minimums. Unlike self storage, offsite data storage allows organizations to be charged only for the space being used.

Reports of data inventory can be generated by the storage companies to provide information on which boxes are sent for storage, what new boxes are being added, and when boxes are to be destroyed.

They also comply with the data protection laws and they cater to a wide range of industries with data management and storage needs such as the medical, legal, finance, tax, real estate, and other public and private organizations and individuals.

Document and media storage is now a must for modern organized entities due to legal regulations. With offsite document storage, companies are provided with secure and efficient facility for their documents and access them easily.

Today, digital media and document storage services abound to serve its high significance in the business world.

The needs and wants of consumers have changed a whole lot over time. This is evident with all that has changed in technology, vehicles, fashion, and home decor. Every aspect of consumer buying has been marked by a constant change in design. Consumers may not be completely aware of it, but furniture design has changed a lot over the last 100 years.

The early era of furniture design was marked by lots of hand-crafted pieces. Much of the furniture from the early era of furniture design was produced outside of the United States. Italy, Mexico, Denmark, Sweden, and Canada were all major players in the furniture import arena.

Some of these areas still provide furniture for the United States, but the U.S. doesn’t rely on imports as heavily as it did 100 years ago. Much of the furniture that is purchased throughout the states is manufactured in America.

The American design also marked a change in quantity as well. Certain pieces of furniture are mass produced through technological advancements that have drastically reduced lots of hand crafted manufacturing techniques. This has changed the way that consumers buy furniture as well. The present day furniture designs have expanded to include more than a sofa and a love seat. Many furniture sets are designed with a recliner or an ottoman. This extended design has supported the housing developments that were designed for larger family units.

Another aspect of design that marks change is the different varieties that are available. Sofas and chairs are made of leather and suede, but there are also unique designers that specialize in other material designs. There are designers that make sofas from paper. Others may even utilize unique substances like crystals to form chairs. Most of this is experimental, but many of the present designs give a small glimpse into future furniture designs.

This is be realized even more as more designers go green and use less wood to construct furniture. Much of this is based on the powerhouse companies that are behind many of the designs that are purchased today. The business of furniture sales is no longer a one dimensional sales market. Today former super models like Cindy Crawford have a major hand in creating different furniture designs. This marks a big change from the limited designs that were available 100 years ago.

This variety is part of the change that consumers have looked forward to in recent years. Present day furniture is a conversation piece. It is more than a couple chairs and a couch. Furniture comes in different textures and colours. There are plush sofas, decorative chairs, and colourful sofas that have been designed with technology. These pieces show ongoing changes in design.

Flipping real estate properties is not for everybody but it is the fastest way to make a buck in the real estate business. Most everybody has heard of someone buying a “run down” house for a good price well below market value, fixing it up and selling it at a fair market price. Flipping a “fixer-upper” is definitely one way to turn a reasonably quick profit. I know some people who do it this way but they are more into the contractor and renovation business than they are of the investor mindset.

Some of these “fixer-upper” properties are in need of extensive repair and will involve electrical work, carpentry work, etc. If the investor gets involved and does some or all of this work then there could be enough profit there but if the investor farms out the required labour, profits could get eaten up quickly. For these types of flipping real estate investments, the purchase price needs to be at a huge discount and normally would be found somewhere in the foreclosure stage.

For the person that is in the mindset of investing rather than being in the renovation business then flipping real estate will only involve flipping the paper contract of the property without even taking possession of it. You can flip by entering an agreement to buy a property then sell the contract to another investor before close of escrow.

Using this technique won’t even require you to put your name on the title. Profits will generally be less than the fixer-upper investor but involves much less work and the whole process is much quicker. A fixer-upper investor would not be happy in making a profit of a few thousand dollars for a few months work on renovations but an investor that can just flip a contract for a few hours or days work would be.

Avoid disclosure of your profits to the new buyer by using a double closing.

After making a sweet deal and flipping a contract involving a juicy profit you may not want all these details to be revealed to your buyer. The solution is a double closing, transferring the property to you initially and then reselling immediately at the same lawyer’s office just an hour later to your buyer.

There is a drawback here and that is a double set of closing costs so you would have to weigh it out to see if it’s worth it to your particular situation or not. Further, you can use a title insurance company for the actual closings. For the issuance of the title insurance policy, the title insurance company will prepare the closing documents and close the transaction usually without an addition charge.
